چکیده

Understanding mechanisms for the evolution of barriers to gene flow within interbreeding populations continues to be a topic of great interest among evolutionary theorists. In this work, simulated evolving diploid populations illustrate how mild underdominance (heterozygote disadvantage) can be easily introduced at multiple loci in interbreeding populations through simultaneous or sequential mutational events at individual loci, by means of directional selection and simple forms of epistasis (non-linear gene-gene interactions). It is then shown how multiscale interactions (within-locus, between-locus, and betweenindividual) can cause interbreeding populations with multiple underdominant loci to self-organize into clusters of compatible genotypes, in some circumstances resulting in the emergence of reproductively isolated species. If external barriers to gene flow are also present, these can have a stabilizing effect on cluster boundaries and help to maintain underdominant polymorphisms, even when homozygotes have differential fitness. It is concluded that multiscale interactions can potentially help to maintain underdominant polymorphisms and may contribute to speciation events.

Speciation by Self-organizing Barriers to Gene Flow in Simulated Populations with Localized Mating

Speciation caused by intrinsically forming barriers to gene flow is demonstrated using simulated populations. Although theory predicts that underdominance would be quickly eliminated from randomly mating populations, herein it is shown that when mating interactions are localized, mild underdominance can persist for long periods, as interbreeding populations self-organize into patches of compati...

Multiscale Modeling of Pedestrian Dynamics: Individuality vs. Collectivity

The dynamics of human crowds are mainly ruled by mutual interactions among pedestrians. The latter develop indeed behavioral strategies based on their perception of the state of the surrounding environment, including especially the presence of neighboring individuals. For instance, when heading for a certain destination pedestrians normally deviate from their preferred paths in order to avoid c...

Invasion and migration of self-limiting gene drives: a comparative analysis

Recent advances in research on gene drives have produced genetic constructs that could theoretically spread a desired gene (payload) into all of the populations of a targeted species, with a single release in one place. This attribute has advantages, but also comes with risks and ethical concerns. There has been a call for research on gene drive systems that are spatially and/or temporally self...

Application of M3GM in a Petroleum Reservoir Simulation

Reservoir formations exhibit a wide range of heterogeneity from micro to macro scales. A simulation that involves all of these data is highly time consuming or almost impossible; hence, a new method is needed to meet the computational cost. Moreover, the deformations of the reservoir are important not only to protect the uppermost equipment but also to simulate fluid pattern and petroleum produ...

Multiscale image segmentation using a hierarchical self-organizing map

Multiscale structures and algorithms that unify the treatment of local and global scene information are of particular importance in image segmentation. Vector quantization, owing to its versatility, has proved to be an effective means of image segmentation. Although vector quantization can be achieved using self-organizing maps with competitive learning, self-organizing maps in their original s...
